I just hit MTGO draft number 60 and figured it'd be a good time to snapshot decks I've had success with and the draft logs that got me there.
Some of the earlier drafts have some picks I would not make today so don't hold me accountable for my heinous crimes of passing Syr Konrad for a Bake into a Pie.
I'll be writing a more in depth article about the format in a week or two but for now I'll leave you with some quick hits of concepts and ideas that I've found to be important for the format.
1. The most important aspect of deck build in this format is having a good mana base, preferably heavily weighted towards one colour. 9-8 mana bases are rarely optimal because of Adamant payoffs and the flexibility of picking up the CCCC hybrid uncommons late in the pack.
The hybrid uncommons are some of the most powerful cards in the set and staying close to one colour means you can take a P3P7 Arcanist's Owl if you're UB but have a manabase that's something like 13-4 and a golden egg.
2. A note of the hybrid uncommons, I take these cards fairly early, usually around picks 2-5. They are more flexible than they look, being castable in their respective colour pairs (Loch dragon is a colourless card in UR) but also in a base U deck or base R deck.
3. Golden egg is a very high pick. It enables a bit of flexibility in your mana base, and is good in multiple decks (UR draw 2, GB food etc.) I'm sad if I cant pick a sweet rare or uncommon P1P1 but i'm not unhappy to pick an Egg if theres nothing above replacement level in the pack
4. Here is a list of uncommons in order of best to worst that I take P1P1 over the best common (Bake into a pie)
Here is a list of uncommons I take P1P1 over the next best commons (Scorching Dragonfire/Reave Soul/Ardenvale Tactician)
5. You may notice I take Merfolk Secret keeper stupid early (Just below Scorching Dragonfire/Reave/Ardenvale Tactician.) This is mostly because of how important I think the card is to base blue decks.
Secretkeeper is the best U common in my books and you should just be taking it pretty highly. It enables what U decks want to do in my experience, not just UB.
U based control (Ur, Uw, Ug, or UB, note that these decks are different than UR or uR for example) will play as many copies as it can get its hands on. It gives you an easy gameplan and makes your other cards better. What it boils down to is that U's easiest path to victory is mill and I don't see Secretkeeper as a card that's only good in a turbo mill deck
Theres a ton more I could talk about in regards to success and strategies in the format (and I will soon I promise!) but without further ado, here are the trophy decks.
